Occupational Hygiene - What is it?
Occupational Hygiene “is the practice of protecting workers’ health and safety by identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards that could cause injury, illness, or discomfort”.
While OHS SafeAssist can also work in the safety part of this equation, our focus is more on the health aspect. This is where the health of workers may be affected by the environment they work in, especially with contact with fumes, particulates, vapours, etc. Typical exposure is through inhalation, absorption through the skin, ingestion and even injection.
We can visit your site, get to understand your concerns and recommend a path ahead. There are options. One option is to undertake personal worker exposure monitoring where workers wear a small pump on the back or hip, connected to a sample train fitted in the breathing zone of the worker.
Biological monitoring (usually through urine) may be another option or can partner with exposure monitoring. It may just be advice around implementing controls or improving existing controls, without going to the expense of exposure and biological moniotoring.
Exposure monitoring will determine the amount of the substance within the breathing zone of a worker. Biological monitoring will determine whether any of the substance is getting through the PPE defenses the worker is using and into the workers bodily systems.
In NZ, workers are about 10 times more likely to die from a work-related disease than from an work-related accident.
Work-related health deaths are estimated at 750-900 a year.
There are an estimated 5,000-6,000 hospitalisations each year due to work-related ill-health.
